1. How to Choose the Perfect Spot for your Beginner Vegetable Garden

Choosing the right spot to grow vegetables is vital for your plants’ health with several factors to consider.

Sunlight

Choose a spot that is in full sun for as much of the day as possible (6 hours is good). Sunlight provides the energy for luscious growth, without it your plants may be weak and prone to disease.

Shelter

Strong winds can be devastating, breaking stems and tearing roots. Choose a spot that benefits from the shelter of hedges or fences.

Level

Slightly sloping is OK but flat is preferable. Water runs off slopes leaving the higher level dry and the lower level waterlogged.

Space

Choose a space that is about 10 ft by 8 ft with room to move all around it. You will often kneel around the beds so bear this in mind. This will hold two raised beds at 6ft x 3ft.

Water

Regular watering means a source close by is essential. You’ll soon get fed up carrying watering cans a long distance. I like to collect rainwater in a large butt located right next to my vegetable plot.

No Space, No worries
