Fire up your Photography with Flaming Light.
Stuck inside on another dark and dreary day?
Snow piled up outside with temperatures set to freeze the proverbial nuts off a brass monkey?
Is your camera calling to you with nowhere to go?
Add some light filled pizzazz to your day with these ideas that use just fairy lights with fantastic effect.
Choose a dark background for this project as this will help the lights show up best. A dark corner of a room will do as long as the lights don’t get too close to the wall.
Set up your fairy lights at about table height. You could just make a random pile of them , intertwine them with tinsel, or pop them in a big clear glass bowl. The coloured LED ones work best for this, set to shine continuously.
Have a zoom lens ready on your camera, the kit zoom will do just fine.
Set your camera to shutter priority and dial in between 1 and 1.5 seconds exposure.
Set focus to manual.
With the focal length set at it’s shortest, compose your shot so that the lights fill the screen.
Now comes the part you will need to practise.
Start turning the zoom ring then press the shutter while still zooming.
Take a look at the shot you have taken. If it’s too light, decrease exposure compensation. Increase it if it’s too dark.
If you want your streaks longer you can increase the exposure time. If the streaks are too wiggly you could use a tripod. I like a bit of wiggle in mine :-)
Keep experimenting with composition, number of lights, adding reflective objects and anything else you can think of.
Before you put your lights away, why not take some out of focus shots to create beautiful bokeh. This kind of shot is perfect for adding texture and interest to other work either through photoshop or in mixed media projects.
In this one, I used the kit zoom. This produces the pentagon shaped bokeh. For more expensive lenses you will get closer to round bokeh. For this project I love the pentagon shape, so more than happy to use the cheaper lens here.
This kind of photography opens up a world we can’t see with our own eyes, a kind of secret beauty to brighten any dull day.
It’s your turn now to go and experiment. As they say, lights, camera….
