Three stripe white tail

Bumblebee on Rhododendron flower.

I will confess to having become more fascinated with them this year than ever before.

That’s mostly due to the fact that I was bought a brand new macro lens early in the year. The quality of the shots I can get with it are amazing. Sometimes.

A lot of the pictures I get are rubbish. Bees move a lot and leave me with a lovely picture of a blurred bee bum or …. just a flower centre.

At close quarters even the smallest breath of wind moves the flowers right off the screen.

If the camera is hand held, just breathing causes camera movement.

But persisting brings great satisfaction. And once you’ve got through all that persisting, you feel you’ve just got to know exactly what you’ve captured.

Therein lies another problem. In the UK there are 270 species of bee. Add to that the bee lookalikes and the number increases dramatically.

Capture another insect and that number increases to hundreds of thousands. Way too many to be sure of an identification.

As for the bee at the top of the page, I’m not sure yet which bee it is. I’ll update you when I’ve worked it out 😁
